The Polish Theatre in Bydgoszcz – history and magic of the stage
The Polish Theatre in Bydgoszcz is a place where history meets modern theatrical art. The beginnings of the Bydgoszcz theater scene date back to the 17th–18th century, when performances took place in the school theater of the Bydgoszcz Jesuit College (today's town hall on Jezuicka Street). In the 19th century, the stage moved to the former Carmelite monastery church, and in 1895 a building was erected on Gdańskie Przedmieście according to the design of the German architect Christian Heinrich Seeling.

After World War II, the original building was destroyed, and the theater operated in various locations, including the former German summer theater Elisium and the building on Grodzka Street, where the chamber stage was active. Finally, in 1949, the current building was created according to the design of Alfons Licznerski, in which the Polish Theatre remains to this day.

In 2000, the theater was named after Hieronim Konieczka – an outstanding actor, director, and cultural animator associated with Bydgoszcz. Its repertoire has attracted both residents and tourists for years, offering performances for adults and children as well as artistic workshops. The extraordinary achievements of the stage were highlighted by awarding its director, Paweł Łysak, the “Polityka” Passport in 2009 for consistently built repertoire and innovative artistic projects.

Today, the Polish Theatre is not only an exhibition space but also a cultural center of Bydgoszcz, which combines a rich history with a vibrant, modern theater scene, attracting tourists and art lovers from across the country. Visitors can learn about both the fascinating history of the building and feel the magic of the performances held inside.
