The Archeress – an icon of Bydgoszcz and a city symbol
The Archeress is one of the most famous and cherished sculptures in Bydgoszcz – a true symbol of the city that has adorned Jan Kochanowski Park, right opposite the Polish Theatre, for over a hundred years.
This unique bronze statue, the work of German artist Ferdinand Lepcke, was created around 1908–1910 and depicts a young woman at the moment of drawing a bow. The figure, with classical proportions and an athletic silhouette, stands on a pink granite pedestal, emphasizing its elegance and distinctiveness.
The history of “The Archeress” is as fascinating as the sculpture itself. It was first placed at Theatre Square, where it caused quite a stir among the residents, and its nude form sparked social discussions. Over time, the statue was moved to a quieter spot in the park, where it now delights tourists and local walkers alike.
Over the years, The Archeress has become not only a work of art but also a significant symbol of the city – its image appears on souvenirs, publications, and awards, and even inspires the names of local institutions and sports teams.
