Granaries on the Brda – the history of the city in the heart of Bydgoszcz
Granaries on the Brda are one of the most recognizable symbols of Bydgoszcz – a distinctive complex of historic warehouse buildings on the riverbank, which for decades has been an icon of the city and a motif often appearing on postcards, brochures, and photos promoting Bydgoszcz.
The granaries were built in the last decade of the 18th century as grain warehouses at a place vibrant with trade and water transport – this is where goods arrived from Kujawy and Greater Poland to be sent further along the Brda and Vistula rivers. Today, part of these historic buildings houses a branch of the Leon Wyczółkowski District Museum, which presents both permanent and temporary exhibitions dedicated to the history of Bydgoszcz and the region.
In the renovated interiors of the Granaries on the Brda, visitors can see rich collections concerning the city’s history, graphics, ethnography, and music, while the permanent exhibition “From the Old Market to Freedom Square. A walk through the streets of interwar Bydgoszcz” takes visitors on a fascinating journey through daily life, culture, and the development of the city.
